Harley Davidson X440 Bikencar Take

Introduction

The X440 is the first midsize motorcycle of Harley-Davidson manufactured particularly in India in conjunction with Hero MotoCorp. Based on a new 440-cc air-oil-cooled single, it aims at those consumers who desire Harley character but do not wish to pay the weight penalty or the price tag that comes with the big twins.

The X440 is an attempt to blend traditional-looking Chet roadster elements with modern hardware and technology, but remains an everyday kind of machine.

The bike is aesthetically at the border of retro and modern. The old-timey-looking metal tank looks turtle-y in profile, the LED head-lamp with the ring of light that is the DRL, upside-down (USD) forks, aluminum wheels (in Vivid and S trims), and a clean 3.5 inch TFT in the top-spec S trim give the bike modernity.

The final details, such as contrast stitching used on the seat and the bronze colour on the engine or the sharp badge, reinforce an upmarket positioning which remains evident within the 350- 450cc segment.

The 38 Nm peak of the single-cylinder mill comes at only 4,000 rpm, which equates to easy off-brakes and little shifting in traffic. The wide, low-height handlebar and seat height of 805 mm provide an almost neutral riding stance, and 170 mm of ground clearance allows the X440 to ride over the usual Indian speed-breakers.

It has the advantages of preload-adjustable twin shocks and controlled damping, sufficiently firm to be sporty, but pliable across patchy tarmac. The braking confidence comes with dual-channel ABS with 320 mm / 240 mm discs.

Even the bare bones denim model comes equipped with full LED lights, a trip computer, and dual-channel ABS. The mid-spec Vivid gains alloy wheels and tubeless tyres; the top-spec S gains a colour TFT with Bluetooth music, calls and turn-by-turn navigation, as well as traction-assist, Rider Safety Enhancements. Fast charging USB-C, slipper clutch, and an assistive torque are other modernising features.

Some of its competitors include Royal Enfield Classic 350 and Triumph Speed 400, in terms of torque and braking kit. Its 194.5 kg curb weight is comparatively heavy, but its torque curve and six-speed gearbox cover any weight disadvantage off the line. Unlike the Classic 350’s 5-speed gearbox, the X440 features a smoother 6-speed transmission, offering better highway performance while offering a more comfortable ride than the Speed 400.

Harley-Davidson has created the X440 for young, budget-conscious riders who want to experience the brand without giving up everyday practicality. With strong low-end torque, a well-balanced chassis, and multiple variants to choose from, the X440 strikes a smart balance between classic design and real-world use. It might feel a bit heavy for beginners, but overall, if you're not chasing extreme performance or loud exhaust notes, the X440 delivers a solid, well-rounded experience.
