Although the Indian customers prefer the SUV segment, hatchbacks are still a solid choice. These small cars are perfect for manoeuvring in cities with heavy traffic and small roads. However, opting for these cars means sacrificing cabin space. As such, we have made a list of the ten best small cars in India under 8 lakh and detailed how many adults can fit in them comfortably.

We have created and numbered the list based on the wheelbase of each model. According to this criteria the MG Comet EV ranks first, being the smallest retail car in India. Most of the models on this list belong to the hatchback segment.

1. MG Comet EV

Wheelbase: 2010 mm

Price: Rs 7.35 lakh to Rs 9.86 lakh

The MG Comet EV is currently the smallest car in India. It comes in a 4-seater configuration and can comfortably accommodate adults of up to 6 feet. The MG Comet EV does not get a boot space in the traditional sense. You’ll need to fold the rear seats to make some space, effectively making it a two-seater if you want to move luggage.

  • Comes with a 17.4 kWh battery pack with a single motor setup that produces 42 PS and 110 Nm.

2. Maruti Suzuki Alto K10

Price: Rs 4.20 lakh to Rs 6.20 lakh

The Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 is the smallest Maruti car currently on sale. The successor of the Maruti Alto, the K10 comes in a 5-seater configuration. The rear seat is ample for occupants of up to 6 feet, which is not the case for the driver's seat. Lack of a height-adjustable driver's seat results in an uncomfortable driving position for taller individuals. The boot of the Maruti Alto K10 can fit around 4 small bags and is reported to be around 214 litres.

  • Comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, manual AC, air filter, 6 airbags and ABS with EBD.
  • Is powered by a 1-litre engine that uses petrol or CNG for fuel. While burning petrol, the engine delivers 68.5 PS and 91.1 Nm, and with CNG, it has an output of 57 PS and 82.1 Nm.
  • The Alto K10 CNG gets a mileage of 33.40 km/kg, while the petrol gets 24.39 kmpl (MT) and 24.90 kmpl (AT).

3. Maruti Suzuki S-Presso

Price: Rs 4.26 lakh to Rs 6.11 lakh

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is one of the best small cars in India. It slots between the Alto K10 and Maruti Wagon R in the carmaker’s portfolio. 6-footers can sit in any of the spots and have ample knee and headroom. The rear seat can easily accommodate two adults; adding a third passenger will be a tight fit. You can fit around 4 backpacks in the 270-litre boot space.

  • Comfort and safety features include a 7-inch touchscreen, 2 airbags, manual AC, reverse parking sensors and remote keyless entry.
  • Engine options include a 1-litre petrol or CNG engine. The petrol engine (66.6 PS/89 NM) is mated to a 5-speed MT and a 5-speed AMT, while the CNG engine (56.6 PS/82.1 NM) is limited to the MT.
  • The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso gets up to 25.30 kmpl (AMT) mileage with petrol and 32.73 km/kg mileage with CNG.

4. Tata Tiago / Tata Tiago EV

Price: Rs 4.99 lakh to Rs 8.85 lakh

The Tata Tiago and its EV counterpart, the Tiago EV, are the smallest Tata cars in India. Both models offer ample space for tall adults and can even accommodate three at the back without much trouble. The driver's seat is height adjustable, making it comfortable for people of various heights. The boot space on both the petrol and EV Tiago is 240 litres, enough to fit four small suitcases.

  • Both the EV and ICE models have a 10.24-inch touchscreen, cruise control, automatic air conditioning, and rear parking sensors.
  • The Tiago EV gets two battery packs with a range of up to 293 km. The ICE, meanwhile, gets 1.2-litre petrol (86 PS/113 Nm) and CNG (75.5 PS/96.5 Nm).

5. Renault Kwid

Price: Rs 4.69 lakh to Rs 6.44 lakh

The Renault Kwid is one of the best small cars in India under 8 lakh. The front seats of the hatchback accommodate tall adults easily, but the same can't be said for the rear row. 6-footers will feel a lack of knee room, especially when the front seats are pushed back. Although the Renault Kwid is a 5-seater, three grown adults will find the rear row a bit uncomfortable. It has a maximum boot capacity of 620 litres.

  • The Renault Kwid has an 8-inch touchscreen, manual AC, day-night IRVM, reverse parking sensors, a USB charger, and ABS with EBD.

6. Maruti Wagon R

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is one of the highest-selling cars in India. It is one of India's best small cars, capable of seating up to five adults. The second row can easily seat 6-foot-tall adults with the front seats pulled back. The shoulder room is also adequate for three adults. The boot space can accommodate a suitcase set.

7. Maruti Suzuki Ignis

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis has the same wheelbase as the Wagon R on paper yet comes with a slightly smaller cabin space. The driver seat on the Ignis gets a height-adjustable function (top trim only). The rear seats are a tight fit for three adults but offer ample headroom and knee room. The boot space is enough for three to four small suitcases.

The last row offers ample knee room and headroom with comfortable seats. All positions can fit tall occupants even with front seats pulled back. The Punch gets 336 litres of boot space that can accommodate a full set of suitcases.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios' boot space is enough for a couple of small suitcases.

10. 2025 Tata Altroz

The newly launched 2025 Tata Altroz is the last model on this list. The driver gets a height-adjustable seat, making it ideal for every height. The rear seats can accommodate 3 adults, although uncomfortably. The seats themselves are comfortable, with rear AC vents enhancing the experience.

  • The Tata Altroz comes with a 10.25-inch infotainment system, auto AC with rear vents, a wireless phone charger, 6 airbags and ABS with EBD.
  • The 2025 Altroz gets three powertrain choices: 1.2-litre petrol, 1.2-litre petrol+CNG and a 1.5-litre diesel engine.

While small, these cars are ideal to be used as a daily driver or for going on shopping trips. Some of these models can also be used for short-distance family vacations.
