Tata's Electric Scooter: Fact or Fiction?

EV News | Jun 04, 2025 | Posted By: Kartik Rangam

A rumour has been going around for a couple of months now that Tata is all set to launch a new EV scooter in India by August 2025. What could have been chalked up earlier to an April Fool's joke, apparently has made a lot of people have hope for this model. We were able to find the first post that spread this news and decided to check if it's legit or just fake news. Let us have a look at whether the Tata Electric Scooter is real or just fake news.

Price

According to a LinkedIn post, which is possibly the first account to spread this rumour, the Tata EV scooter has an expected price tag of around Rs 1 to 1.2 lakh. A price tag before the launch of a product is suspicious on its own, but the wording makes it sound like an expected price and not something that's confirmed yet.

This expected price tag puts this EV smack dab in the middle of models such as OLA S1 Pro 3rd Gen and Chetak Electric.

Features

According to the same post, the unnamed EV scooter has a bunch of generic features such as a digital display, alloy wheels, disc and drum brakes. The post then describes what each of these features provides instead of providing further information, such as the size of the brakes or the wheels.

Powertrain

If the post is to be believed, the Tata EV scooter is expected to come with a 3.5 kWh battery pack. It's the same size as its rivals, such as the Bajaj Chetak Electric and TVS iQube ST. While the two EVs that exist offer a range of around 145-150km, the Tata EV scooter comes with an expected range of 200km.

Similar to features, a lack of specific figures makes it seem more like fake news than a real spec sheet. No mention of motor output or even charging times, even in an expected tone, makes one wonder if it's all just made-up nonsense.

Real Or Fake News?

While astute readers have already figured it out, let's spell out every reason why this post is fake news.

No Announcements from Tata

Tata, as a company, announces any developments. Tata is a listed company and needs to declare an expansion plan as big as entering an entirely new vehicle sector. Since the creation of this post, Tata has not made a single announcement regarding this.

Generic Information With No Reliable Source

A random LinkedIn post is more often than not fake if not backed by a relevant source. A good rule to follow on the internet is to assume everything is a lie unless proven otherwise. A lot of people in the comments of the post were excited, with only a few able to spot it as a lie.

Most of the features and powertrain information are generic and seem to be copied from other models at the same price.

Tata Doesn't Need To Enter the Two-Wheeler Market

Tata Motors currently has its toes in both the retail and commercial markets. They make cars, buses, trucks and even three-wheelers. In retail numbers, Tata is mostly top three and is doing well for itself. Even if Tata were to expand to the two-wheeler market, doing so would require them to set up new assembly lines, which would have been announced by now.

It's All AI

The image attached to the post is made by AI. If you carefully look at the woman on the right, you can see that her hands are not real. It gets worse as the guy on the right seems to be missing his legs. The funniest part of this is the misspelling of Tata on the EV scooter and the logo looking more like Toyota instead of Tata.

Putting the post through an AI Detector also revealed that the entire post was written by an AI, which explains the PR tone of the post.

While it's fake news, at least it's more believable than another rumour about an Rs 14,000 Patanjali EV scooter, which you can read about here.
