Following the news about annual passes for FASTag, a new rumour has been circulating online that the government is planning to introduce a toll tax for two-wheelers from July 15th 2025. This news has been spreading like wildfire on social media, so let's check out if it's authentic or not.
Fake News
No suspense building unfortunately, as toll tax for two-wheelers is fake news. While we were unable to find the source for this, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, posted on X(Twitter) that there are no proposals ongoing that suggest this. The Minister also tagged a news channel, which presented this rumour on television. Gadkari also called this unhealthy journalism and denounced the act of spreading news without confirming its legitimacy
NHAI also posted on X(Twitter) that the news about two-wheelers having to pay toll tax is fake. They also confirmed that the government, as of now, has no plans to introduce this and has no ongoing proposal for the same.
In short, two-wheelers all across NHAI-controlled highways and expressways will continue to enjoy 0 toll tax. With this rumour being fake, you don't have to worry about getting a FASTag for your bike or scooter.
Annual Passes For FASTag
The new rumour likely came on the heels of the government announcing FASTag annual passes. Under the new scheme, private vehicle owners can purchase an annual pass which lets them take 200 trips and save around Rs 7,000 per year. You can read more about it here.
